Layering and Textures

Layering and Textures  real-decorative-small.jpg

Okay – You want to give your room some character, warmth and depth.  Here are some quick inexpensive ways to accomplish your goal.

Layering will add warmth to a room. If a room appears cold and boring adding layers of fabric can turn up the “heat” and give the room some spice.  For example, add a rug, add cloths to the tops of tables, add pillows of different shapes and sizes to that boring couch and add accessories that have texture. Your room will gain instant warmth.

Hint: You can use beautiful placements under lamps. Try placing a smaller square table cloth on your table (on the diagonal) so that the corners are on each side of the table as opposed to the corners of the table – leaving the corners of the table exposed. Or try crisscrossing two table runners for a different effect. If you have a favorite table cloth now, try getting some bold colored fabric napkins to coordinate with your table cloth. If you have curtain panels up now that you love – try adding a valance that compliments the room or add panels to the window that currently has only a valance to spice up the décor you already have!

Texture will add depth to what might otherwise be considered a rather flat fabric or element.  Many of today’s fabrics are beautifully accented with texture. A certain amount of texture should be introduced in every décor.  It will visually stimulate the eye, and help produce a beautiful room.

Texture can be added with materials with a “character” of their own such as wood, wicker, tile, marble, glass, fabric and metal. It can be added with decorative embellishments such as tassels, bows, cording, and other trims. You can add with faux painting techniques, wallpaper and window treatments to name a few.

The most important part of decorating is obviously creating a atmosphere that makes you feel good and comfortable.  Many times we try to copy a decor we see in a decorating magazine because it looks stylish and later realize that the room wasn’t created so much to be lived in as it was to be looked at.  As long as you stick to what appeals to you and colors you enjoy, its hard to go wrong.

Fabrics and Trims

fabrics-for-home-page.jpgFabrics and Trims:

When considering what fabric to use for your window treatments, we suggest you stop and survey the room the treatments are to be used in.  First and foremost you want to choose a color that is compatible and blends well with the rest of the décor in the room.

If you have a room that has a lot of patterns and prints in it, you may want to use a solid color for your window treatments or you may want to consider a valance that uses two fabrics. It’s acceptable to have a few different patterns or prints in a room, especially when they are in the same color group, but adding too many can make the room appear cluttered.  You could use a solid for the main face fabric and a print fabric for the contrast. You could do the same with our rod pocket panels also using a solid color for the panels and have the tiebacks made in a contrasting fabric. This will give your treatments a little pizzazz and may help give balance to the rest of the room.

If your room is mostly solid colors then you could add some flare to the room by adding window treatments made in a beautiful print fabric. To really liven the room up you can again use a valance that combines two fabrics, you could try using a floral on the main face fabric and a striped fabric as a contrast. And don’t forget you can always add a pair of matching or contrasting curtain panels to go underneath the valance for even more pattern.

Today you will find window treatments, table accessories and pillows made using a vast array of decorative beaded trims, fringes and tassels. Everywhere you look you will see the new trend. Decorators today love adding embellishments to decor to give a room more texture and ambiance. Many of our products give you the option of adding trims and tassels should you appreciate the decorative look they offer.

To pull a room together, we suggest having decorative pillows made to coordinate with your window treatments.  You can have them made in the main fabric that you used on the window treatment or try having them fabricated using the contrasting fabric of your valance if you choose a style that offers two fabrics.  Either way it will give your room a special finishing touch.

Curtain and Drape Styles

tab top curtainsCurtains and Drapes

Curtains and drapes are great sources for giving a room privacy and or possibly blocking light or just to give it a decorative flair.  Curtains and drapes come in many styles, lengths, fabrics and textures.

In today’s market tab top curtains are a very popular choice for providing privacy in the evenings, letting the light in during the day and offering a relaxed look in today’s busy households.

Pinch pleat drapes are an icon in the window treatment industry and will never go out of style.  These drapes are great for your more formal rooms. These window treatments are normally used on a traverse rod and are opened and closed by a corded pulley system.  Pinch pleat drapes are usually pleated to 2 ½ to 3 times fullness.

There are of course your standard rod pocket style drape that are sources to use under valances, they can be tied back, opened or closed and offer a great look in any room . Rod pocket curtains are normally made with a 1 ½” or 3” rod pocket depending on how you plan on displaying them. Normally if you are using the rod pocket panels under a valance a 1 ½” rod pocket with no header would be used.  If you plan on displaying the curtain without a valance then you would normally want a standard 3” rod pocket with a 2” header.

Stationary drapery panels are again normally associated with the more formal décor, since they are stationary they remain open at all times and aren’t normally tied back. These drapery panels work best when used with a decorative pole.

Lastly there is all the new rage of grommet drapery panels.  Grommet panels are a very contemporary modern curtain that offers casual yet very stylish décor to your room.  The grommets are available in several finishes.  A decorative pole no larger than 1 3/8” should be weaved in and out of the grommets when hanging this treatment.
